William Smith died from wounds on 14th March, 1915, after having been sent to a base hospital on the coast, but as yet there is no information as to when and where he was wounded. The 3rd Royal Fusiliers battalion was part of 85 Brigade, 28th Division, that had arrived in France in mid January, 1915 and had been holding the line in Belgium to the south of Ypres since then.
